Professor Tom Nordenholz in December of 2011 of the California State University Maritime Academy, aka Cal Maritime, petitioned to establish a Pi Tau Sigma Chapter. The petition was unanimously approved and Cal Maritime was chartered as the 173rd chapter, on March 3, 2012 at the Annual Convention at nearby San Jose State University. Thirteen students along with Dr. Tom Nordenholz, were initiated at the convention on March 3, 2012. Dr. Nordenholz became the Faculty Advisor of the newly chartered chapter.
Cal Maritime, a small campus with a demanding program of mechanical engineering and marine practical training, tries to stay as active with Pi Tau Sigma as possible. We have held annual initiations of about 10-12 students per year. Our students have attended some of the annual conventions. Recently, we have supported STEM events on our campus for middle and high school students, including the Kidwind Challenge.
