New Mexico Tau Delta
Las Cruces, NM 88003
Early in the spring of 1950, Professor Arch M. Lukens called a meeting of eligible mechanical engineering students to discuss the possibility of establishing a chapter of Pi Tau Sigma at New Mexico State University - at that time known as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Sponsored by Professor G. F. Panlener, a petition was presented to the National Council. A charter was granted, and the New Mexico Tau Delta Chapter was formally installed April 13, 1950, by National Secretary-Treasurer D.S. Clark.
From the beginning, the New Mexico Tau Delta has worked to promote academic excellence and solidarity within the Mechanical Engineering Department, Tutoring, the administering of teaching evaluations, and the presentation of the Outstanding Sophomore Award have always been among the many service projects executed by the chapter. Social functions including parties, banquets, and participation in Engineers' Day and Engineers' Council activities help establish rapport between students, faculty, and graduate students. A close liaison with the student section of A.S.M.E. lays the foundations of the close unity that exists within the Mechanical Engineering Department at New Mexico State University.
